A small growth

Dear F,

Yesterday I managed to change the car headlight by myself, and I feel very proud of the good job done. Initially I wanted to go to the mechanics with the light bulb that was given by the previous car owner. But I decided to go online and find websites and videos about how to change it myself. It appears that it was possible, and I gave it a go.

It was not as easy as I thought as there was limited space to move around without any torchlight on. And then, I remembered that there was a comment by someone online to look at the car owner manual. Surprisingly, there was a section on the topic with diagram step by step! And it was easy. Imagine the money I saved!

Also last night, I went to Movie World's Fright Night. The theme park was turned into a dark creepy place where there are random zombies in the smokes and fogs appearing out of no where to growl and scare you. Then there were the four different themed maze. The designs were cool, and of course there are the random people poking out to give everyone a good scare. It would have been great if I calmed down and just enjoy the props and sets, but honestly, I am not brave enough even though deep down we know it was all fake. I just want to reach exit as soon as possible. We were asked to put our hands on the person in front's shoulder, and I think I gave the strangers in front of me quite a hard squeeze especially when I am scared. One of the guys said at least I do not have long fingernails! I thought I would be less timid by the time I have done the fourth maze. It was easier when you were the last few ones, and that you already knew what would happened when the people in front of you experienced it before you do. But being the last one on the fourth maze, is still not comfortable especially one of them kept following me.

There were lots of people queuing up for the maze. There were also people dressing up in Halloween type costumes. Some random normal people tried to scare at me too! WTH, just because I look timid and am alone, doesn't mean you can just bully me. Anyway, it would be better, if I went with a bunch of friends, but too bad no one could or was interested to come. I didn't any rides, but managed to finish the maze and saw one performance show. There was another earlier one but I totally missed that.

I hope that I have become less timid after this. Going alone and manage to get through the mazes means I am not that hopeless right? There is still so much thing in life that I need to learn.

                                                                                                                         Rarr,

Before Midnight

Dear J and C,

It is nice to see both of you again after 9 years. I could not believe that it has been 9 years. We first saw both of you in 2004, and then revisit the younger you in 1995.
Both of you looked good, and it is a pleasure to spend a day with both of you, listening to your fluid witty conversations, humour, worries and honest feelings.
The truth is that real life isn't easy.
Maybe we can see you again in 9 years time?
        To passing.

World's Biggest Orchestra Challenge

Dear SX and Yj,

Today I was part of a world record! Haha, well not officially until they finalised it in a few weeks time. Me and SW joined the World's Biggest Orchestra Challenge as a triangle player. We had to break the record of 6452 set by Vancouver in 2000, by playing the assigned medley piece continuously under a conductor. If more than 4 person out of 50 stop playing, we have to repeat the piece all over.

We took courtesy public transport to Suncorp Stadium. There were musicians of all ages carrying their precious musical instruments walking towards the Stadium or taking the buses with their supportive families. We converted our tickets from audience to participants, got our special blue T-shirt saying "I am in the World's Biggest Orchestra Challenge" and collected our free instruments. IN regards of the T-shirt colour, we overhead a guy on the bus saying that the organiser got the colour wrong: It should be Maroon and not blue! (Maroon was Queensland state of origin colour, and Blue was New South Wales's, which is usually Queensland's nemesis) The event organisers were giving away free recorder, tambourines and triangle. SW wanted to play tambourine but there were only triangle left. Both of us play piano, SW could play violin too, but she said she was not up to scratch to join the violin groups.

We had lunch and took photos with local football's greats statues wearing the same T-shirt. There were school children, parents, youth, families, elderly practicing their musical instruments on the grass. It shows there is no barriers in music. We went into the stadium, and the triangle players were allocated at the corner, next to the violin and the trumpets, and below the saxophones. We practices the beat with the music scores given. There were seas of blues on the participants sections, and we were so happy that we decided to participates instead of being the few audiences across the stadium. There were pre-event shows including performance by Take 6, an acapella group that performed a cool version of How Deep is Your Love.

Finally, James Morrison, who is Australia's famous jazz trumpet player arrived leaded by a band, and driving a Segway.  Mr Morrison is the artistic director of Queensland Musical Festival this year, and will be the conductor of the orchestra. First, we had a sound wave around the stadium, instead of the hand wave. Then, each music instruments were tuned accordingly. Mr Morrison introduced each orchestra instruments, where the participants played their own instruments when it is their turn. As Mr Morrison correctly said, this might be the last time we would ever heard so many people playing the same instruments. It was wonderful hearing people participate with passion and such a great tone each instruments have. The trumpets were the loudest, and the violin was be the most played instruments. We triangles, were determined not to be overlook too, even though we are a percussion!!

We rehearsed the medley piece in parts. The music starts of with an opening, "Waltzing Matilda", "Ode to Joy" and ended with "We will rock you". There were a few hiccups as expected. As the stadium was big, we had to depend on seeing the conductor's baton to follow the beat as our ears might tricked us to be slower that expected. It was difficult to see the baton from afar, but as Mr Morrison said, look at his arm which is holding the baton! The other problem was that the screen picture projection was slower than Mr Morrison's hand, hence it was decided that we were to follow the screen. Then there was the tempo issue with We will rock you where some instruments came in slower than the percussion. And of course, for us triangle, there will be always a few people that strike the triangle when we are not supposed to. Mr Morrison decided to blow the trumpet and conduct at the same time for the third song. After a few quick practice, without knowing whether we will succeed or not, we proceeded to the challenge for real.

The opening sounded great, and everyone was putting 100% of effort in it. All professional, amateur and beginner musicians were given music scores for their instruments prior to this event to practice. We got through Waltzing Matilda quite well and we were happy that for Ode of Joy the triangle had major parts at the beginning when the music were soft. It was also very helpful that there was a triangle "conductor" in front of the podium, who was a good guide, until he had a bit of minor glitch for the third song. Anyway, as the music flow through, and when one start listening to the music as a whole, the beat comes naturally and it is hard to go astray. I think the percussion were important too as a metronome that helps the others to follow the beat. When we hit the last note abruptly, we realised that we succeeded! We, 7223 passionated musicians and music lovers worked together, and broke the world record! It was a moment of excitement,  joy and happiness. We were both disappointed that it ended so quick! SW thought we were just doing rehearsing run instead of the real take, and she said she was so concentrating in getting the triangle part right that she forgot to enjoy and listen to the music.

We were so glad and happy that we did this. It was up till just now that I realise this might just be the last orchestra that I had taken part in (even though it was "just" the triangle, not.), and that I might not have another opportunity again if I do not take up another instrument and be really good at it.  Regardless, it was a great and rare experience to be remembered. Where would you get 7223 musicians and music lover of all ages, to gather at the same place, same time, playing music for love, for all and for a goal, and then disperse back into their own life in the next hour? As the guy we met outside the stadium said, do not think that it was too short, just continue to play your instruments and find another venue or group to have your music heard.

              Long live, classical music players!

                                                                                                                jy

p/s:  After watching this video posted by an audience, it was obvious that echo was an issue when Mr Morrison's trumpet played from the centre of the court was of different tempo from the sound heard from the player seats. Either the others could not catch up with the tempo of Mr Morrison's, which is the correct guide, or there is a delayed in hearing the sound from Mr Morrison's for the players who were seating on the seats. It was not perfect, but it was done.

Gumbo

Dear SX, YJ, D and M

I have been thinking of gumbo even in my dreams since leaving New Orleans.
Coincidentally, I found fresh okras at one of the supermarkets the second day I came back.
Today, I made seafood gumbo from scratch using a few online recipe with what I have.
Eating homemade gumbo, listening jazz music from the TV, it feels like I am back in New Orleans again!

Drunk

Dear Y,

It is overwhelming to see someone become drunk in front of you.
Few minutes ago, he was fine. And later, he started talking loud and gibberish.
We looked at each other, and agreed that he was drunk, even though he denied it.
We advised people to stop and reduce alcohol drinking. We heard the bad stories and complications from alcohol intoxication and dependence. Yet some people do not practice what they preached.
I have seen drunk people while working, but I have not seen the process from sober to drunk until last night.
There is a sense of helplessness and anxiety being the observer. No, he wasn't violent at all. But you just can't help yourself to feel anxious of the drunk's disinhibition and unpredictable behaviour.
A little drink is fine, once you are over the threshold, it is a risk to the drunk, and also to other people.
So people, please cut down drinking, and drink with care. Being a drunk is not worth it. Alcohol is not your friend.

Second Day of CNY.

Dear X,

I have bad dreams this morning.
I have tears running non stop today due to Formaladehyde.
I was quite disappointed that not everyone attended or was notified about Tong Xue Hui, which I can't attend. I think it is unfair for people who did not know or was not notified. A Tong Xue Hui is not a Tong Xue Hui if not everyone is invited, or notified. But, I couldn't say it bluntly, because I am not the organiser, and I am not there. Perhaps there is a story behind it.
I met up with two friends, who have been very positive in life figthing sickness.
             I want my letters.
Auntie wants me to go for fortune telling about my love/relationship/marriage prospect. I think I already know what he will say as there is only few predictable outcome.

"Babies"

Dear S,

We were babies when we were first born.
We became the "babies" of primary school pack.
We struggled, grew up, learning, adjusting, maturing,
and when the time comes, we graduated.

Then we become the wide-eye "babies" again, of secondary school.
          the cycle repeats:
          in university,
          our first job,
          our new job,
          new experience,
          new role.

          We reborn, again and again,
Developing, gaining more skills, more facets, achieving new heights
          until perhaps perfections, or bored.

At the end, we slowly regressed to baby-like.
          Finally, the cycle stopped

                                                                                                  Cheers ,

M,

J Rabbit

Dear all,

Have you heard J Rabbit before? J without a full stop after it.

I first heard them while watching "Operation Proposal" (Korean Drama) . The OST "If you love me" was cute, clean, fresh and easy to the ear. It's youthful girlish yet soothing and fun, which fits the nostalgic teenage drama. They have another OST in the same drama called "Greetings", which has a sad vibe.

Few days ago, I recognise the singing voice again, in my latest favourite Korean drama "Flower Boy Next Door", which is currently running on air. My brain was on searching mode, trying to find out when and where I have heard this voice. The fact that it was a recognisable voice, is a plus in the music industry. I narrowed it down finally to Operation Proposal, and did a google search, and realise that it was J Rabbit. Well, I didn't notice who sang "If you love me" initially anyway.

J Rabbit is actually a duo Korean Indie female group: A main vocalist, and a musician/ percussionist/ backup singer. They have a youtube channel, write their own songs, and do covers as well. They are both very talented, and I think their group name suit them very well, they sounded and looked like two cheerful musical rabbits.

A breath of fresh air like J Rabbit is good for the ear and soul.
